About TruckMaps AU

Heavy-vehicle GPS navigation on NHVR networks

TruckMaps AU plans routes for the heavy vehicle you're actually driving — a B-double, road train, bus, oversize or agricultural vehicle, or anything else in the NHVR catalogue — then guides you turn by turn with your phone's GPS. It runs in the browser on phones, tablets and computers: nothing to install. The app itself is called HV Navigator.

Guidance only — your permit/notice and road signs take priority.

What it does

Everything is built around NHVR's own data for your vehicle, with the checks a heavy-vehicle driver needs before and during a trip.

  • Routes for your vehicle type

Pick your NHVR vehicle category and the exact vehicle. The app lists the NHVR networks that apply to it, with their authorising notices, and NHVR's router plans the route on the networks you tick. Access is colour-coded along the line.

  • Up to three route options

The fastest route first, plus up to two alternatives. Each shows its time, distance, the difference to the fastest, the main roads it uses and how much of it is approved for your vehicle.

  • Avoids restricted roads and tunnels

NHVR's router labels roads that are restricted for your vehicle but doesn't route around them. TruckMaps AU looks for options that do, marks the first one without restrictions as Recommended, and tells you when it can't find one.

  • Bridge mass check

Enter your gross vehicle mass and every route option gets a bridge badge: structures whose published mass rules are below your mass, and ones you need to check. Most bridges have no published figure, so treat it as a guide, not a clearance.

  • Dangerous-goods and height checks

Switch on dangerous goods and confirm your height (filled in from NHVR's vehicle details) to flag tunnels and roads with dangerous-goods bans, height limits and published clearances — and to look for options around them.

  • Spoken turn-by-turn navigation

Live GPS guidance with spoken directions, early warnings for restricted roads, tunnels, low clearances and dangerous-goods bans, and automatic rerouting that keeps to the route option you chose.

  • Hazards along the route

Bridges and structures that aren't approved for your network, clearance points and turn restrictions from NHVR's open data, listed in order along your route and announced as you approach them.

  • Made for the cab

Big touch targets, light and dark themes, up to three stops per trip, your recent places and vehicles kept on your device, and the screen kept awake while you drive where the browser allows it.

How it works

Plan in four steps, then press GO.

  1. Route. Your start fills in from GPS. Add a destination and up to three stops — by address, a recent place, coordinates or a tap on the map.
  2. Vehicle. Choose the NHVR category, then the exact vehicle with its length, height, width and mass. Vehicles for the states on your route are listed first.
  3. Networks. See the networks that apply to your vehicle and their notices. Add your gross mass, check your height, and say whether you're carrying dangerous goods.
  4. Preview. Compare up to three route options with their restriction and bridge badges, warnings and hazards, then pick one.
  5. GO. Turn-by-turn guidance with voice, warnings ahead and automatic rerouting.

Where the data comes from, and how fresh it is

Vehicles, networks, routes and access come from the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) — the same services behind NHVR's National Network Map. Routes and access are NHVR's at the moment you ask; vehicle and network lists are refreshed from NHVR every 12 hours.

Hazards, the bridge mass check and the restriction checks use NHVR's official open-data network files. They're checked against NHVR again once they're a day old and updated whenever NHVR has changed them.

Pricing

Routing, NHVR checks, hazards and spoken navigation are free for everyone. Pro is only about the map and address search.

Free

A$0

  • Heavy-vehicle routes, up to three options, restriction, bridge, height and dangerous-goods checks, hazards and spoken navigation.
  • Google Maps and Google address search while the shared monthly Google allowance lasts.
  • After that the app switches to OpenStreetMap until the allowance resets — everything else keeps working.
  • No account needed.

The free Google allowance is shared by everyone who uses TruckMaps AU each month, with daily limits to keep it fair.

TruckMaps AU Pro

A$20 per month

  • Everything in Free.
  • Your own Google Maps allowance, so Google Maps and Google address search stay on after the free allowance has run out.
  • Billed monthly in Australian dollars through Stripe. Manage or cancel it from your account in the app.
  • Needs a free account (email and password).

Fair-use limit: 1,000 map and search requests per month. Past it, you're on OpenStreetMap until your next billing period. Daily limits on Google use still apply to every plan, so on a very busy day the map can switch to OpenStreetMap until the limit resets.

Questions and answers

Is this a permit, or an approval to use a route?

No. TruckMaps AU is guidance only and doesn't authorise any journey. Your permit or notice conditions and road signs always take priority. Treat sections shown as Restricted, No access or Not on mapped network as needing a permit or a local-access check before you travel them.

If the app shows no warnings, is the route cleared for my vehicle?

No. The checks read the rules NHVR publishes, much of it as free text, and the data can be incomplete or out of date. A route without a finding isn't cleared for your vehicle or load — check it against your notice and permit like any other route.

Which states and territories does it cover?

Maps and address search cover all of Australia. Vehicles, networks, routes and access come from the NHVR, so their coverage follows NHVR's National Network Map. The NHVR administers heavy-vehicle access in the states and territories under the Heavy Vehicle National Law: the ACT, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and Victoria.

Western Australia and the Northern Territory run their own heavy-vehicle access schemes, so for trips there check Main Roads WA or the NT Government as well.

Does it work offline?

Partly. Searching, route planning, rerouting and loading network data need a mobile or Wi-Fi connection. If you lose signal while driving, guidance carries on along your current route and the app tells you it's offline, but it can't reroute until the connection is back.

There are no offline map downloads, so parts of the map you haven't viewed yet may not show without signal. Plan your trip while you have coverage.

Why does the map sometimes switch to OpenStreetMap?

Google charges for every map load and address search. Free users share a monthly Google allowance, with daily limits to keep it fair. When a limit is reached — or Google isn't available — the app switches to OpenStreetMap and shows a short notice instead of blocking you. Routes, NHVR checks, hazards and navigation keep working, and Google Maps comes back when the limit resets. Pro subscribers get their own allowance.

Do I need an account?

Not for the free version. An account (email and password) is only needed to subscribe to Pro. Your vehicle, network choices, recent places and settings are saved on your device, not on our server.

What do I need to use it on my phone?

A current version of Chrome, Safari, Edge or Firefox with location turned on for truckmapau.com. Spoken guidance starts with one tap on GO. Some browsers can't keep the screen awake, and iPhone Safari can pause the page if you switch to another app, so keep TruckMaps AU on screen while you drive.

Is TruckMaps AU part of the NHVR?

No. TruckMaps AU uses NHVR's public data and services, but it isn't affiliated with or endorsed by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator.

Guidance only — your permit/notice and road signs take priority.

TruckMaps AU doesn't authorise any journey and never tells you a route is legal, safe or compliant. Check every route against your notice, permit and network conditions, and obey road signs and road-manager restrictions.

Routes, restrictions, bridge figures, clearances and hazards come from published data that can be incomplete, out of date or wrong. Plan your trip before you set off, and only use a phone that's securely mounted, as the road rules require.
